Martin Turner's last comments on poems and poets

Jim, this is really a most impressive long poem, all done in a casual, thoughtful, natural tone that an actor would love to speak. There are strong glimpses of a real past (in Scotland?) and, in the present, compelling insights and crystallisations. I’m unclear about many things. Did this couple get together (“our children”) or stay apart? Who burnt the scarf? And so on. At this length, some of the passages ramble slightly and lose tension. So, although I admire the length, the poem might gain from some modest cuts. Also a look at punctuation (it reads like a draft) . The word currents occurs in two consecutive lines close to the beginning. But apart from minor blurrings, this is a magnificent effort, full of stamina and emotional maturity. My wife thought it was written by a woman — which is praise of a kind!

I'm getting really interested in this aunt - we've met her before in 10 x 3 plus. She is a sign of good things to come, albeit in almost unnavigable territory.

    Heart breaking. Focus beautifully held.
