  • POEM: All Ignorance Toboggans Into Know by Edward Estlin Cummings (2/12/2005 10:09:00 PM)

    i really like this poem
it is a great one for fomenting discussions among students
    regarding the human condition
    and mans inquisitive spirit
    all ignorance toboggans into know
    means that given time
    human intuition gravitates toward enlightenment
in the same way that london said that
    all life makes for light
    the gravitation toward enlightenment
    is an upward fall
if one can taste the deliciousness
    of that irony
    trudges back to ignorance again
means that the more we know
the more we know we dont know
    but rather than frustrating us
that should invigorate and excite us
because knowledge quest is a lot like sport
    even snow melts means that
    there are periods
    both historically and personally
    when progress lies dormant
    and proceeds not a lot
history is too small for even me
means that there isnt enough time
it also means that theres too much to know
    but thats ok
because again it is an exhilarating game
we'll move away still further: into now
means that history time and knowledge
    are fluid like a river
    they never stand still
and are hard to quantify exactly
    but that's still ok
