I love the metaphors RLS uses and I love the way he writes poems and stories. I think he's really noticed how fires work and the thoughts you can have when staring at the flames. We love poemhunter and we look at a poem every day.
This poem is very funny with the lookout not looking but it is also realistic with the brains of the men spattered everywhere. I think that John Silver does not mind at all apart from the messy paintwork and having to clean it up, I'd hate to think what the pretty pranks they played were.
This poem tells you exactly what is in the ships. It has a realistic idea of what might be in a dirty British coaster and a fantastic idea of what might be in the quinquireme and stately Spanish galleon. The rhythm of the poem keeps the beat very well. I really like John Masefield and the way he keeps the rhythm in his poems is not at all old fashioned as rappers are doing the same every day.
